INTRODUCTION TO NAPHA
(North American Peruvian Horse Association)
The North American Peruvian Horse Association (NAPHA) is emerging from PPHRNA. In August 1970, the Peruvian Paso Horse Registry of North America (PPHRNA) was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of California. Through the years, with the help of members and the direction of long-time Executive Director Janetta Michael, PPHRNA very successfully developed a proprietary software program, relational database, systems of accuracy and integrity, a reputation for responsiveness and an unquestioned devotion to preserving and perpetuating the Peruvian breed.
Near the end of 2004 as a three-year effort toward uniting the North American Peruvian Horse community appeared to reach an impasse and Janetta Michael's retirement neared, a group of determined Peruvian Paso owners resolved to use the past and lessons learned to transition PPHRNA into a new and distinct organization called the North American Peruvian Horse Association (NAPHA).
A united Peruvian Horse community is good for everyone. Regardless of the number of organizations or viewpoints within the Peruvian Horse industry, the way for everyone to prosper is by invitation to a place people want to "visit" and for a product and lifestyle they will love. Everyone devoted to a Peruvian Horse knows the value of the product and lifestyle. The opportunity for NAPHA is to create the place people want to visit - the association they want to join - the lifestyle they want to have. With the involvement of its members, NAPHA is resolved to be the sustaining and positive voice in the industry.
The intent of NAPHA is to continue to protect the integrity and accuracy of breed records, respect the needs of the membership, appreciate the contributions of forerunners and other Peruvian Horse associations, realize a focus toward the potential Peruvian Horse owner/breeder, and to operate as a full-service equine association in which members will proudly belong.
The North American Peruvian Horse Association is the industry's opportunity to return to what participants share as passions and investments. It is the chance to capitalize on what works - the registration process, proprietary software, show systems - and it is the time to capture a new "spirit". NAPHA seeks to reflect the needs of today's North American Peruvian Horse industry - grasping those needs is the task of good communication.
With a fresh start, NAPHA begins the "Next Generation" in the North American Peruvian Horse world. The opportunity is to grow by introducing these special horses and inviting people to discover what NAPHA Members already know. This is the time to emphasize the attributes that will attract newcomers. The perfect horse is the head start - having fun, being proud, putting forth a professional and smart image, planning, focusing on the positive, getting involved and maintaining integrity are the essentials.
The North American Peruvian Horse world is as magnificent as the people and horses in it - taking steps to support the best of this world is the promise that it will be here tomorrow! -
Released by the initial NAPHA Board on February 16, 2005.
NAPHA Actions to Date
The North American Peruvian Horse Association (NAPHA) became an entity upon the transition of PPHRNA records/materials/properties/members and registered horses to NAPHA. All current members of PPHRNA are automatically NAPHA members.
NAPHA will operate from a Business Plan which is completed and professionally designed and from donations of up to $100,000 per year for two years.
PPHRNA Executive Director Janetta Michael retired at the end of February with a legacy of service and dedication; integrity and accuracy of records; proprietary software programming, operational systems, workflow, and history; and an unquestioned knowledge and love of the breed.
The four initially-appointed members of the NAPHA Board are Richard Apsley, Bob Calentine, Jorge Galante and Larry Redman. Three additional Board members will be elected from the membership at large.
NAPHA bylaws are very similar to the original bylaws proposed for the PP/AA merger. NAPHA is a member-driven organization; the membership may propose and vote on By Law Amendments and changes.
NAPHA will welcome the AA with open arms if the current Board and membership elect to pass a merger.
NAPHA will have a Governing Council of representatives elected from geographic regions. The three Elected Directors will come from the Governing Council.
After 18 years as the PPHRNA Assistant Registrar, Arlynda Castro will serve as the NAPHA Registrar handling Registrations and Membership from the Santa Rosa, CA.
NAPHA has opened an office in Texas and hired an experienced marketing and promotion person. A Marketing Plan has been written, including communication strategies within the NAPHA membership as well as a program for promoting the Peruvian Horse nationally.
A new administrative person has been added to the Texas team to handle Show programs, administrative tasks and to help at the National Show.
The first NAPHA Meeting will take place in Las Vegas, NV and is in process of being planned.
The NAPHA Mission
Through the involvement and support of its members, NAPHA is resolved to be the sustaining and positive voice in the Peruvian Horse industry. The intent is to protect the integrity and accuracy of breed records, to respect the needs of membership, to appreciate the contributions of forerunners and other Peruvian Horse associations, to realize a focus toward the potential Peruvian Horse owner/breeder, and to operate as a full-service equine association in which members will proudly belong.
LETTER FROM THE RETIRING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends and Fellow Aficionados of the Peruvian Paso Horse,
After 37 years of deep involvement with the Peruvian horse, I am retiring as Executive Director. In many ways, I never thought this time would actually come - and I'll bet many of you didn't either! Our interest in the breed began in the early 1960s with the purchase of a half Peruvian mare, Heather. By 1970, we had imported our stallion, *Hercules, the gelding, *Barrabas, and 16 mares.
I attended the founding meetings of the Peruvian Paso Horse Registry of North America prior to its incorporation in 1970. In all that time, I have only missed one meeting of the organization. (From the time Fletcher graduated from college, I don't think he's missed any.) I have been the Secretary, President, Registrar and Executive Director. Since I am still 39 years of age and holding, that means I began my career at 4 years of age. Definitely a child prodigy.
Actually, I must make a confession. We all know how adults often say, "I used to play fireman with my little red truck and ladder as a kid - and I grew up to BE a fireman. You can substitute doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher. I only thought of this about 8 years ago, but when I was in grammar school (oops - that dates me, doesn't it?) I raised American Shetland Harness Ponies. They were kept at my grandparents ranch in Sonoma County, CA. During the winter months when I visited the ranch, it was often too rainy and muddy to put them to harness. I remember spending many an hour in the barn's tack room - making up ponies! I would study the latest magazines and bloodlines. Then I'd fill out a registration application for "my" next champion - picking a mare and stallion I thought would produce well together. I'd put in the pedigree, color, markings. It was all quite complete. I didn't actually try to register these Champions - but I did do all of my own registration work for my "real" ponies. Playing at registering ponies - and ending up the Registrar for Peruvian Paso Horses.... Truth really is stranger than fiction.
Much as my job may have been my destiny, for the last five years, I have expressed to the Board my desire to retire. I actually did so in 2001 but returned when the newly hired Executive Director didn't work out. The time just wasn't right for me or the Registry. However, this time everything came together and on June 12, 2005 I tendered my final resignation effective March 1, 2005. Mother, Fletcher and I have wanted to move to the northern Idaho area around Coeur d'Alene for quite some time. Our family has moved twice within the Santa Rosa area because I didn't feel a release from the Registry. This time, when the owners of our rented house decided to move back to the area and take possession, it was definitely TIME. Now that the merger question has been resolved (disappointingly, unfortunately), the Board has resolved to bring organizational changes to the PPHRNA. There is a large group of serious but enthusiastic people willing to take on the challenges of our breed and see it move forward. This seems the perfect time - "in with the new, out with the old."
I know the breed is in good hands. I would just remind everyone that there are going to be big changes in the next few years. Please be patient - and most of all, be INVOLVED. The breed needs what only YOU can bring to it - whether it be your ideas, donations, volunteered time or work on a committee. The breed needs everyone to pull TOGETHER. Yes, it's disappointing that we don't have one organization, but that just means those of us who were in favor of that goal need to work even harder at unity. The move from a Board-driven to Member-driven organization means that you must be involved. Should you run for Governing Council or Director? Help with your local club or show? Start or participate in an All-Breed Trail Ride which can highlight our breed's finest qualities to other pleasure horse riders? Offer to write or find good, informative or educational articles for the newsletter? Whatever it might be, please step up.
Some have called to say "good-bye" as if we were leaving the planet never to be seen again. While I appreciate your concern, we don't plan on leaving our galaxy any time soon. Upon reading Donna Bearer's kind words in the last issue of the Peruvian Digest, I had to pinch myself - just to be sure I was still alive and above ground. Generally such tribute only comes in a eulogy. Thank you, Donna. I appreciated getting to hear such kind words from this side of the grave!
Fletcher and I plan to continue our advertising agency and hope that by working together, we will each have a little more free time. Which probably means that you'll see us at a show or meeting every once in a while. Those Peruvian Pasos - not only are they like potato chips (you can't have just one) but they're also like a virus - once you've got the "bug" - you're always hooked! And even more importantly, we have made many strong and enduring friendships that go way beyond the horses. You are too much a part of our lives for us to disappear.
Adios,
Janetta (Fletcher and Lu)
GOODBYE TO A DEAR FRIEND OF THE PERUVIAN PASO
ANGIE
(DeLOZIER) SCHMIDT
byConnie Leshin
"Viejita" is a word in Spanish that means "little old one" and although Angie was in her late 30's and I was in my 20's, it came to be the name that we used for one another because we sometimes we had memory lapses or said silly things. Along with our friend Laurie Morgenstern, the three Viejitas became close friends. We laughed a lot and had great fun. And we each were passionate about Peruvian horses!
I was a first year teacher at Mojave High School and taught all levels of Spanish. Shawn was to be the first of Angie's sons who became a student in my classes. This was in the mid 1970's and *Piloto was becoming a real star in the world of Peruvian horses. I met Angie and John and later, Johnny, Joey and Danny became students in my classes. I would drive out often after school and visit with Angie and we would spend hours studying and talking about bloodlines. Then we would go out and admire and evaluate the stallions, mares and foals. Sometimes we would ride as well.
Angie and I really connected. I was interested learning about Peruvian horses as I had recently returned from Colombia where I rode a Paso Colombiano, now known as the Paso Fino horse. The Peruvian seemed to be similar and so began a wonderful friendship between Angie and myself. She was a huge storehouse of knowledge. I affectionately called her "carrot top." She was a real dynamo with energy to spare. She loved Peruvian horses and studied bloodlines intensely. We would talk for hours about this horse or that one and who we would breed this mare to, who we would geld etc. She sold me one of my favorite horses, *Bello Esmeralda, a *Piloto daughter, who I took to a Reserve Championship. And for over 25 years until late last year, I rode another wonderful gray *Piloto daughter named La Viejita in honor of my friend.
Sometimes we would drive to Randberg and visit Slim, who played the guitar with Angie. As you all know, she was a wonderful guitar player and among the songs she would sing one about chickens and rabbits that she made up both tasted just the same. We would laugh and laugh! We also had a tradition of watching The Kentucky Derby together every year at the American Legion in California City. We would examine each horse in the race and then have a friendly bet as to who would win. Although we never picked winners, it was a lot of fun!
We became co-editors of the Peruvian Horse World magazine and traveled together around Peru in the late 1970's and early 1980's in a light blue volkswagon bug. We attended several Peruvian National Shows together, drank Pisco Sours, listened to Peruvian music and talked and talked and talked. On one of our trips to Peru, we got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere in Southern Peru. As I was not adept in changing tires, I questioned her about what we were going to do. Angie responded, in her matter of fact tone, that she would obviously change the tire and I would direct traffic. And we did, and soon drove on our way. She was a very handy person!
Angie liked to laugh. We would make up funny stories about people who we were fond of. We designed a "cutie club" for sweet and kind men who we knew in Peru. And we even nick-named one, Jose Antonio Onrubia, Inspector Clousseau, because he reminded us of the Peter Seller's character in the Pink Panther movies.
The night before she died, the moon was full and I could clearly visualize her, dressed in a blue blazer and white pants, a white Peruvian hat and white tennis shoes, with her big Angie smile waving "good bye" and then turning around and walking down a wide hallway filled with light. At the end of the hallway were the people and horses that were touched by her presence in their lives. I will always treasure her and keep her in my thoughts especially when I am riding Katalinda, my Peruvian mare.
Hasta luego Viejita!
Angie's service will be this Sunday in California City at 2 p.m. There will be a reception afterwards at the American Legion Hall where Angie used to spend a lot of time when she lived in Cantil. In case you do not know, California City is about 20 minutes east of Mojave. Her son Danny is trying to get an idea of how many will attend. If you are going to come or know people who are coming, please let me know! I will tell him! sunnyday@QNET.com
Thanks...
Connie

February 19, 1945 March 9, 2005
The Figuerola
family invites you to a memorial service which will take place on April 9th
at the Santa Barbara Mission in honor of Don Alfonso Figuerola, who sadly
past away on March 9th.
First and foremost, Don Alfonso was a family man. With his loving wife, Dr. Rossana Figuerola, they raised their children together, as a family, in the deepest and truest sense of the word. Doña Rossana will remain in Santa Ynez Valley, California with her two sons, Antonio Alfonso and Alejandro Alfonso.
With his family, he was the co-founder of Figuerola Laboratories, Figuerola Group, Inc., Figuerola Peruvians, and Café Figuerola. Obviously, his love, passion and devotion for the Peruvian Horse, filtered into his business life with the founding of these companies. He had also recently completed his upcoming book (to be published in 2006), Equus Peruano. His business endeavors were just another example of his lifelong journey to bring better education, nutrition, and understanding to Peruvian Horses and their owners.
Please join the Figuerola family this coming April 9th in Santa Barbara to pay tribute and celebrate the life of their loving husband and father.

NEW OWNER OF CONQUISTADOR MAGAZINE
From Charlotte Dicke:
I am very proud to announce that I recently purchased Conquistador Magazine from Amigo Publications. For those of you not familiar with Conquistador, it covers all horses with Iberian blood: Peruvian Horses, Andalusians, Lusitanos, Paso Finos, Spanish Mustangs, Aztecas...
I'm looking forward to continuing Conquistador as a quarterly publication, still based in Santa Ynez, CA. Oddly enough, my first job was at Conquistador. I have always had a special place in my heart for the magazine so owning it is a dream come true for me! My passion for Iberian-blooded horses began over 17 years ago when I rode my first Peruvian Paso Horse and today, ride a variety of Iberian-based breeds and disciplines (editorial research :-)).
The next issue is going to the printer this coming week so please expect your first issue in about 3-4 weeks (depending upon the post office's delivery). If you aren't familiar with the magazine, please visit our website, www.conquistador.com. There will be some exciting enhancements for the magazine over the coming months so stay tuned...

PERUVIAN BREEDER RECEIVES GREAT HONOR
March 1, 2005.
Last night, here in Santa Rosa, CA., the Sonoma County Horse Council
presented the "1st Annual Equus Hall of Fame Awards" at a dinner, dance and
silent auction function at the Flamingo Hotel. There were 10 people chosen
out of 30 nominations made by various horse clubs and organizations, to receive
an award for their endeavors, contributions and accomplishments within the
Equus world. They were each presented a horse head statue award amid speeches,
rounds of applause and standing ovations.
One of the award winners was Mickey Harman, of Camp Silvano, a Peruvian Paso Horse facility on Petrified Forest Road, in Calistoga. Mickey was nominated by Dee Iverson, another of the Wine Country Peruvian Paso Horse Club members to receive this award. There were 25 members of the Wine Country Peruvian Paso Horse Club and some of Mickey's family members at the dinner to cheer her on. Mickey has been extremely active in the promotion of the Peruvian Paso Horse in parades, exhibitions, demonstrations, showing, teaching students to ride and training horses at her ranch. She is always an ambassador for the Peruvian Paso Horse breed.
The information submitted with the Nomination for Mickey Harman is as follows:
The Wine Country Peruvian Paso Horse Club proudly nominates Mickey Harman for receipt of an Equus Award and recognition in the Sonoma County Equus Hall of Fame, and she is most deserving of this nomination and award for the following reasons:
Mickey Harman has been involved with horses for 63 years. Her first horse, at 8 years of age, was a Tennesee Walking Horse. She has also owned a Morgan, Appaloosa and Quarterhorse. For the past 20 years, Ms. Harman has been extensively involved in owning, promoting, breeding, showing and exhibiting the Peruvian Paso Breed and has developed a high level of knowledge of the history, culture, quality and training of the breed. Much of her experience over the years was with her late partner, Silvano Taipe, who was a Peruvian Paso trainer originally from the High Andes in Peru. In 1990, they established Camp Silvano, a Peruvian Paso horse ranch, in Calistoga, California, where she continues to board horses of all breeds and spends many hours a week talking to prospective buyers and owners, helping and answering questions about the Peruvian Paso breed.
The following are highlights of Mickeys horse involvement and history of breed demonstrations, exhibitions and showing:
Long-time member of the Wine Country Peruvian Paso Horse Club (WCPPHC) based in Sonoma County, and has served as Recording Secretary for 2 years, Membership Coordinator for 1 year and has been elected to serve again in 2005 as Membership Coordinator.
Former member for several years of the Back Country Horsemen.
Organized drill teams to perform at the Bolinas Pony Club, the California Carriage Classic for 2 years (once in Petaluma and once in Kelseyville), acted as advisor to the Wine Country Peruvian Paso Horse Club drill team performing at the Western States Horse Expo and Dressage in the Wine Country.
Performed in a 5-hour televised exhibition in Brentwood with 20 horses and 250 people in attendance; at Polo in the Parkat Golden Gate Park for 6 years; at the State Fair with 10 horses and 2 Peruvian Dancers and was part of the Sacramento Peruvian Club Members Global Village; performed 2 years in breed exhibitions at the Western States Horse Expo and volunteered to work representing the breed and WCPPHC; participated in the Menlo Park Circus Club Tallyho Exhibition with10 horses; performed in a breed exhibition at the Sebastopol Apple Festival.
Conducted a breed open house with 170 people in attendance in Santa Rosa.
Participated in numerous parades including the 4th of July and Cinco de Mayo Parades in Calistoga, the Sebastopol Apple Festival Parade, 2004 Sonoma County Horse Council Parade in Santa Rosa in which a Palomino Peruvian Paso Stallion was entered, and the Petaluma Butter & Egg Days Parade.
Participated in horse shows held in Santa Rosa, Vallejo, Sacramento, Stockton, Monterey, Watsonville, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Reno, Nevada, showing between 3-10 horses at a time, has won 9 Champion of Champions awards, and owns a mare who is a double Champion in both Breeding and Performance Divisions.
Mickeys most memorable experience was a performance in a fully gaited drill team, executing a tight pattern with 10 other horses in front of the Grand Marshal who was a Retired Brigadier General from the Bengal Lancers who gave them a special Judicial Trophy and claimed it had been many years since he had seen such beautiful horses and such excellent horsemanship.
Another
of the award winners was Dennis Reis, noted for his initiation of the "National
Day of the Horse" passed by Congress to be celebrated on December 13th each
year, and most recently the "California Day of the Horse", which was passed
by the California Legislature. Dennis Reis is a well known trainer of people
and horses in the practice of horsemanship. He can be seen on his own weekly
TV program via satellite broadcast of RFD TV, five times a week.
It was a great event that will hopefully continue as a tradition for years to come. It was fun to have 'horse people' from so many venues within the horse industry and riding community at one event.

TRIBUTE TO S.H. REGIO
Kim Jaserie
Mom &
I had to go to the equine hospital yesterday. We had to take our 23 year
old stallion, REGIO, who rides in the Rose Parades to the hospital for colic.
He didn't make it. That was the 'LOVE' of our barn. It's been pretty hard
to take. Same hospital where I had to say goodbye to my mare a couple months
back! (Both Mom and I are in shock about it.)
A lot of people are going to miss that guy! Every time we went on trail rides, we fought over who would get to ride REGIO! Everyone who rode him knew they were 'privileged' to be on his back! He was always sound and always happy. Out of all my 30 years with horses, I've NEVER come across a horse quite like that. He was PRICELESS & NEAR PERFECTION! We always had said that if we only could have one horse, that would be the one!
Andalusian people tried to buy him and Charro people tried to buy him! He was the horse whom we put kids on to ride and/or anyone wanting to just try a Peruvian Paso at our ranch. That horse was one of the truest of joys to ride! MANY are going to miss him!
PS Here's his picture with Cheryl Rogers-Barnett (Roy Roger's daughter) up this past January 1st at the Pasadena Rose Parade!

The Board has just unanimously passed a policy in support of our troops in the War on Terror. Associate Membership and Registration fees will be waived for members deployed to one of the War on Terror zones (Iraq and Afghanistan) for the time the member is deployed. To receive this waiver - just send the office a copy of your orders along with your membership application &/or registration work. (The waiver does not apply to registration fines.) If you've already paid dues and registration fees - just send in your orders along with a request for a refund or credit.
While we may have differing views on how the war is being conducted, the Board is sure that EVERYONE wants to support the troops - particularly OUR troops!
The PPHRNA requires DNA typing of all horses registered after January 1, 2004. This new rule will apply to all new registrations including imported horses and AAOBPPH/Canadian transfers, not just foals. (Geldings excepted.) If the horse has already been typed, please send a clear copy of the typing with the registration application. (If typed with a lab other than UCD, please send $10 to pay for recording the type with the UCD lab.) Otherwise....
DNA typing should be requested through the PPHRNA (just send the additional fee if the typing needs to be done and a kit will be sent to you.) Typing is done for the PPHRNA at the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Lab at a cost of $55 for PPHRNA members ($65 for non-members.) This charge covers the cost of the DNA kit, processing by the lab and recording and filing the test results by the PPHRNA staff.
Orders for 10 or more DNA tests are $40/test for members. A member need not type all 10 horses at the same time - but must pay for the ten kits at the beginning. All 10 kits must be used within 2 years.
Want to know what your mare or stallion CAN produce in the way of color? Now you have a new tool at your disposal. The UCD Veterinary Genetics Lab is offering testing. You can get more detailed information at http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/service/horse/coatcolor.html. These tests can be ordered through the PPHRNA office.
The PPHRNA is sending out e-mail Member Briefings (two in the last several months) to inform members of important and timely news. It has been mailed to all members for whom the PPHRNA has an e-mail address. Those who do not wish to receive the Briefings should contact the Registry and request to be removed from the list. Any member who has not received the Briefing but wants to, should contact the office. It may be that we do not have a current address for you!
Want to know how many bay horses are registered in the PPHRNA? How many horses are registered to owners in Oklahoma? Who the registered offspring of a certain stallion or mare are? Who owns your favorite stallion? Now you can have that information as close as your computer. With great thanks to Lionell Griffith, the PPHRNA Stud Book is now available on CD. When you order a CD, the information will be the most up-to-date database of the Registry. All you do is slip the CD into the drive on your PC - and you have the information at your finger tips. Reports can be printed easily and a pedigree feature is included.
SPECIAL PRICE
Original CD (Members) - $50 plus $8.95 s/h (Non-Members) $75 plus $9.95 s/h
Updates - Can be ordered as often as desired.
To receive discount price, the original or last update CD must be returned
with the order.
Members $20 plus $6.95 s/h (Non-Members) $35 plus $6.95 s/h
California residents add 7.5% sales tax.
The Stud Book continues to be On Line through the PERUVIAN DIGEST. Subscribers may log in and search the database by owner, breeder, color, sire, dam, etc. A big advantage of this service is that the on line database is updated each time registration work is completed in the PPHRNA. This means that you have the very latest information on transfers of ownership, castration, registration for breeding, changes and new horses. A year's subscription to the service is only $99 and can be accessed through a secure website by credit card. You can reach the Stud Book at www.pphrnastudbook.com.
PHOTOS ON SEARCHABLE DATABASES
The Registry can now offer photos to go along with the Searchable Databases for Members, Professional Trainers, Horses for Sale and Stallions at Stud. Each listing can have up to 4 photographs. Check out the Horses for Sale listings at www.pphrna.org. Click on Searchable Database - Listing of Horses for Sale. There are several horses with photos available. Each photo will be $5 for the time of the listing. If you already have a listing, just email us the photo(s) as a good .jpg and tell us which listing it is to go with.
BTW, 5 horses from the Horses for Sale Database were sold in this last registration period! Where else can you advertise your horse to such a targeted market for only $5 a year?!
FREE TRANSFERS FROM AAOBPPH/CANADA
Transfers of registration from the AAOBPPH and Canadian Registries will continue to be FREE until January 1, 2006. Click here to request forms and instructions. Please remember that all horses (except geldings) must be DNA typed prior to registration. If the DNA typing has already been done, be sure to send a copy of the results with the request for transfer. There is a $10 filing fee if the typing was not done at UCDavis. If typing has not been done, it must be completed before the horse can be registered. Kits can be ordered directly through the PPHRNA.
IMPORTANT: WEST NILE VIRUS CURES
We received an email from Marco Dapelo about some spectacular results a veterinary clinic in Texas has received in treating West Nile Virus with blood plasma. We certainly hope that none of our members will need this information - but we think you should have it at hand just in case. Pass it along to other horse owners as well. Check out:
